Here’s what happened since yesterday’s email:
Sailing - Erica Dawson (w/ teammate Micah Wilkinson) - Mixed Multihull (Medal Race)
Erica (& teammate Micah) claimed the bronze medal in the mixed multihull, a massive accomplishment after the duo placed 12th at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics! This ends their Olympic journey.
Canoe Sprint - Alicia Hoskin & Lisa Carrington & Olivia Brett & Tara Vaughan - K4 500m Final
Alicia, Lisa, Olivia and Tara have done it! Putting some incredible power in the last stretch saw them win GOLD. This is the end of the Olympic journey for first time Olympians Olivia and Tara. Alicia continues on to the K2 semifinal tonight. Lisa will also race in the K2 semifinal tonight and the K1 semifinal tomorrow night.
Track Cycling - Ellesse Andrews, Rebecca Petch - Keirin (QF, SF, Finals)
Ellesse wins GOLD in the Keirin with a time of 10.744 (0.062 and 0.092 seconds in front of 2nd and 3rd place!). In their respective quarterfinal heats, Ellesse ranked 2nd and Rebecca ranked 3rd. In the semifinal, Ellesse finished 1st with Rebecca finishing 5th, putting Ellesse in the finals and Rebecca through to the 7-12 placing race. Rebecca placed in 12th overall with her 6th place finish in her race. This ends Rebecca’s Olympic journey; she will head home with a silver medal from the team sprint. Ellesse continues on to the qualifying rounds of the individual sprint tomorrow morning.
Athletics - Eliza McCartney, Imogen Ayris, Olivia McTaggart - Pole Vault (Final)
Eliza, Imogen & Olivia all cleared 4.60m (Imogen achieved a personal best!). Imogen & Olivia were unable to clear 4.70m, but Eliza cleared it on her first vault. Eliza was unable to clear 4.80m which saw her ranked 6th overall, with Imogen and Olivia ranking 12th and 13th, respectively. This ends their Olympic journeys. This was the first time NZ has ever had 3 athletes qualify for an Olympic final, in any discipline!
Golf - Lydia Ko - Round 2
Lydia has jumped up 10 places and is now sitting 3rd after Round 2. She will compete in Round 3 tonight.
Athletics - Maddi Wesche - Shotput Qualification (Group A)
Throwing a distance of 19.25s, Maddi has guaranteed herself a spot in the Saturday morning’s final.
Athletics - Maia Ramsden - 1500m Semifinal
With a time of 4:02:20, Maia has set a national record! Unfortunately, this was not enough for her to advance to the finals, as she placed 8th in the semifinal. Great results from this first time Olympian!
