Olympics Update: Saturday, August 10

NZ wāhine claim their 10th medal, and Maddi throws shotput NOW!

Happening now:

• Athletics - Maddi Wesche - Shotput (Final)

  • Maddi stepped out-of-bounds on her first of 6 possible attempts, threw a 19.58m on her second attempt, and threw a 18.54m on her third attempt. Competition is happening now on Paris 9!

Here’s what happened since yesterday’s email:

• Canoe Sprint - Alicia Hoskin & Lisa Carrington - K2 500m (Semifinal & Final)

  • Alicia & Lisa won their second gold medal of the Paris Olympics in the K2 500m final with a time of 1:37.28, a full 2 seconds faster than their closest opponents! This ends the Olympic journey for Alicia. Lisa will race in the K1 500m tonight.

• Golf - Lydia Ko - Round 3

  • Lydia moved up to 1st place (currently tied with Switzerland’s Morgane Metraux) after scoring a 68 in Round 3. She will tee off in the final round tonight.

• Track Cycling - Ellesse Andrews, Shaane Fulton - Individual Sprint (Qual & Round of 32 & Round of 16)

  • Ellesse qualified with a time of 10.108, closely followed by Shaane’s 10.281, advancing them both to the Round of 32, where they both won their respective head-to-head races. In the Round of 16, Ellesse won her race versus France. Shaane lost her race versus Netherlands by one 1/1000th of a second (!!!) which moved her into the repechage, where she won her race versus Canada. They’ll both race in the Round of 8 on Sunday morning.

• Track Cycling - Bryony Botha, Emily Shearman - Madison

  • Bryony & Emily finished 8th in the 30km Madison race. This ends their Olympic journey. They’ll both head home with the silver medal in team pursuit.

• Artistic Swimming - Eva Morris & Nina Brown - Duet Technical Routine

  • Eva & Nina scored a 188.0901 in their duet technical routine, which will not be enough to medal. They’ll compete Sunday morning in the duet free routine.
