Olympics Update: Sunday, August 11
Lisa and Lydia stack up the gold, and tonight will wrap up the Olympics!
Here’s what happened since yesterday’s email:
Athletics - Maddi Wesche - Shotput (Final)
Maddi won SILVER with a personal best throw of 19.86m! She stepped out-of-bounds on her first attempt, threw a 19.58m on her second attempt, 18.54m on her third attempt, 19.10m on her fourth attempt, 19.86m (personal best) on her fifth attempt, and 19.68m on her final attempt. She continues the legacy from Valerie Adams of NZ women medaling in the shotput since 2008. This ends Maddi’s Olympic journey.
Canoe Sprint - Aimee Fisher, Lisa Carrington - K1 500m (Semifinal & Final)
Lisa won back-to-back GOLD in the K1 500m with an Olympic best time of 1:47.36, bringing her gold medal count to 3 at this Olympics (matching what she achieved in Tokyo). Aimee finished just short of the podium (by milliseconds) with a time of 1:49.91. In the semifinals, Aimee won her heat with a time of 1:49.54, and Lisa won her heat with a time of 1:48.10. This ends both of their Olympic journeys.
Golf - Lydia Ko - Round 4
After winning silver at Rio 2016 and bronze at Tokyo 2021, Lydia Ko rounded out her collection with a GOLD at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a score of 278. She was 10-under-par across 4 rounds. This ends her Olympic journey.
Track Cycling - Ellesse Andrews, Shaane Fulton - Individual Sprint (Round of 8 & QF)
In the Round of 8, Ellesse won her race against Canada, advancing her to the quarterfinal. In the quarterfinal, she won her race against Germany in Race 1 and again in Race 2, advancing to tonight’s semifinals. Shaane lost to Great Britain (by a difference of FOUR 1/1000ths of a second), moving her to the repechage where she came in 3rd. This ends Shaane’s Olympic journey.
Artistic Swimming - Eva Morris & Nina Brown - Duet Free Routine
Eva & Nina scored 166.5105 in their free routine, bringing their total across two routines to 354.6006. While they will not medal, Eva & Nina make history as the 3rd ever artistic swimming duo to represent NZ at the Olympics. This ends their Olympic journey.
