Olympics Update: Tuesday, August 6
Ellesse & Rebecca & Shaane win SILVER in the track cycling team sprint!
Here’s what happened since yesterday’s email:
Track Cycling - Ellesse Andrews & Rebecca Petch & Shaane Fulton - Team Sprint (Qual)
Ellesse & Rebecca & Shaane won SILVER in the final that saw Great Britain break a world record! New Zealand women have never before medaled in this race! (They finished 2nd in qualifying, then won against Poland in their Round 1 heat to advance them to the gold medal race.) Ellesse, Rebecca, and Shaane will all cycle in additional races in the coming days.
Triathlon - Nicole van der Kaay & Ainsley Thorpe (& teammates McCullough & Wilde) - Mixed Relay
Nicole and Ainsley (& teammates McCullough and Wilde) placed 14th overall, after Wilde had a heartbreaking bike crash in the first round. This ends their Olympic journey.
Athletics - Eliza McCartney, Imogen Ayris, Olivia McTaggart - Pole Vault (Qual)
Eliza cleared 4.55 metres in qualification. Imogen and Olivia both cleared 4.4m, but neither could clear 4.55m. However, because not enough pole vaulters could clear 4.55m, there was a countback that resulted in all 3 NZ pole vaulters qualifying for the final on Thursday morning!
Sailing - Justina Kitchen - Kite (Race 5-8)
Justina is currently in 16th place after finishing 18th in race 5 before the following races were postponed due to weather. She will continue racing tonight.
Sailing - Erica Dawson (w/ teammate Wilkinson) - Mixed Multihull
Erica (& teammate Micah) are currently sitting in 3rd place after race 9. Finishing 2nd (race 7), 4th (race 8) and 9th (race 9). They will continue racing tonight.
Sailing - Greta Pilkington - Dinghy (Race 9-10)
Greta has placed 34th overall after finishing 39th in race 9. She will not advance to the medal race. This ends her Olympic journey.
Sport Climbing - Sarah Tetzlaff - Speed
Sarah had times of 8.64 and 8.39 (a new Oceania record and personal best!) in qualification, and a time of 8.41 in the elimination heat, which unfortunately was not fast enough to advance. Sarah is the first woman to represent New Zealand in speed climbing at the Olympics. This ends her Olympic journey.
Wrestling - Tayla Ford - 68kg
Tayla had a close match against France’s Koumba Larroque, but lost 0-6. Tayla is the first woman to represent New Zealand in wrestling at the Olympics. This ends her Olympic journey.
Canoe Slalom - Luuka Jones - Kayak Cross (Quarterfinal, Semifinal, Final)
Luuka placed 2nd in her quarterfinal, advancing her to the semifinal. Unfortunately, she scored a fault in her semifinal run, dashing her chances for a medal. She moved forward into the small final, where she finished first, ranking her 5th overall. This ends her Olympic journey.
