Olympics Update: Wednesday, August 7

NZ women have 3 chances to medal tonight (track cycling, sailing, pole vault)!

Here’s what happened since yesterday’s email:

• Canoe Sprint - Alicia Hoskin & Lisa Carrington & Olivia Brett & Tara Vaughan - K4 500m Heats

  • Alicia & Lisa & Olivia & Tara finished first in their heat with a time of 1:32:40, advancing them directly to Thursday night’s final.

• Athletics - Maia Ramsden - 1500m (Round 1)

  • Maia finished her Round 1 run with an incredible sprint in the final 60m, running a 4:02:83 to land in 6th, which qualified her for Friday morning’s semifinal.

• Canoe Sprint - Alicia Hoskin & Lisa Carrington, Aimee Fisher & Lucy Matehaere - K2 500m

  • Alicia & Lisa finished first in their heat, advancing them to Friday night’s semifinal.

  • Aimee & Lucy finished fourth in their heat, so they had to race again overnight in the quarterfinal, but were unable to advance to the semifinal. This ends the Olympic journey for Lucy; Aimee will race again in the K1 500m canoe sprint tonight.

• Sailing - Justina Kitchen - Kite (Race 9-12)

  • Justina is in 17th after six races. She’ll race again tonight.

• Sailing - Erica Dawson (w/ teammate Micah Wilkinson) - Mixed Multihull

  • Erica (& Micah) have qualified for tonight’s medal race after ranking 4th in the 12-race opening series!

• Track Cycling - Ally Wollaston & Bryony Botha & Emily Shearman & Nicole Shields - Team Pursuit (Qualifying)

  • Ally & Bryony & Emily & Nicole finished first in qualification (with a new national record time of 4:04.679!). They will race Italy tonight.
