Olympics Update: Wednesday, July 31

BLACK FERNS 7S WIN GOLD!!! NZ's 1st medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics!

Here’s what happened since yesterday’s email:

• Rugby Sevens - Black Ferns 7s - Quarterfinals vs. China, Semifinal vs. USA, ??

  • Black Ferns 7s have won New Zealand’s first medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics! After winning 55-5 in the quarterfinal over China, and 24-12 in the semifinal over USA, the BF7s faced Canada in the final and won 19-12 to defend their gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics!

• Swimming - Erika Fairweather - 200m Freestyle (Final)

  • Erika finished in 7th place with a swim of 1:55.59. She’ll race in the 4x200m relay heats on Thursday, and the 800m freestyle heats on Friday.

• Rowing - Emma Twigg - Single Sculls Quarterfinals

  • Emma finished 1st in her quarterfinal heat with a time of 7:26.89. She’ll race in the semifinal on Thursday evening.

• Rowing - Brooke Francis & Lucy Spoors - Double Sculls Semifinals

  • Brooke & Lucy placed 1st in their semi final with a time of 6:49.49. They’ll race for a medal on Thursday evening.

• Swimming - Eve Thomas - 1500m Freestyle Heats (Heat 2)

  • Eve came in 6th in her heat, finishing with a time of 16:13.74, which was not fast enough to advance her to the finals. She’ll swim in the 4x200m relay heats on Thursday night.

• Sailing - Jo Aleh & Molly Meech - Skiff (Race 7-9)

  • Jo & Molly had an incredible night of racing, moving up into 7th place after finishing 3rd in race 7, 2nd in race 8, and 1st in race 9. Races 10-12 continue on Wednesday evening, where they’ll want to stay in the top 10 to advance.

• Sailing - Veerle ten Have - Windsurfing (Race 3-7)

  • Veerle moved up into 16th place after race 7. Races 8-12 continue on Thursday morning.
