Paralympics Update: Sunday, September 8
Anna Grimaldi wins NZ's 1st GOLD in the final event of the 2024 Paralympics!
Here’s what happened since yesterday’s email:
Para Athletics - Anna Grimaldi - T47 200m Sprint
In the heats, Anna ran 25.09, coming in first across all 3 heats (and setting a new Oceania record!). In the final race, she beat her own record with a time of 24.72, winning GOLD (NZ’s first gold of the 2024 Paris Paralympics) in NZ women’s final event of the Paralympics. (Talk about a storybook ending to this incredible Paralympic Games!)
Para Swimming - Gabriella Smith - 200m Individual Medley SM10
Gabriella swam 2:38.82 in the heats, advancing her to the finals. In the finals, she swam 2:41.19, placing her in 7th overall! This ends Gabriella’s Paralympic journey - this was the debut Paralympics for the 19-year-old swimmer from Christchurch.
