Olympics Update: Monday, July 29

Black Ferns 7s, Swimming (Erika) & Surfing (Saffi) are on this morning!

Here’s your Olympics update for Monday, July 29th:

(p.s. In case you didn’t hear, our Instagram account is frozen, but hopefully we’ll be back today…)

Here’s what happened since yesterday’s email:

• Surfing - Saffi Vette

  • Saffi placed second in her heat with a total score of 7.50. She will advance to the Round 2 (Heat 6) scheduled for Monday 29th 8am, where she must place 1st in order to advance.

• Equestrian - Jonelle Price - Eventing Team Cross-Country

  • Jonelle (& horse Hiarado) had a tough cross-country run, coming in with a score of 28.40. Jonelle is ranked 41st, and the New Zealand team is currently in 6th place moving into the final event (jumping) Monday 9:30pm.

• Rowing - Kate Haines & Alana Sherman - Pair Heats

  • Kate & Alana finished last in their heat with a time of 7:43.56. They’ll have one more chance to advance in the repechages round on Monday 8:30pm.

• Swimming - Erika Fairweather - 200m Freestyle Heats

  • Erika came in second in her 200m heat - she’ll swim in the semifinals on Monday 7:50am.

• Rowing - Jackie Kiddle & Shannon Cox - LWT Double Scull Heats

  • Jackie & Shannon won their heat with a time of 7:02.25, moving them into the semifinals on Wednesday 9:34pm.

• Tennis - Lulu Sun - Singles Round 1

  • Lulu lost 6-4, 6-3 in her first round of singles, ending her single tournament. She’ll continue to play in the doubles tournament with Erin Routliffe. (And spoiler alert - she’s the guest on our podcast this week! Have a listen!)

• Sailing - Veerle ten Have - Windsurfing

  • Windsurfing has been postponed due to weather conditions.

• Rowing - Jackie Gowler & Davina Waddy & Phoebe Spoors & Kerri Williams - Four Heats

  • Jackie & Davina & Phoebe & Kerri finished their heat in 2nd place with a time of 6:45.44. They’ll race for a medal on Thursday 8:54pm.

(Monday, July 29th)

• Cycling: Mountain Bike - Sammie Maxwell - Cross-country

  • Sammie finished in 8th place, marking her best ever result at an elite race.

• Gymnastics - Georgia-Rose Brown - Artistic (Subdivision 3)

  • Georgia-Rose scored a 51.465 in all-around qualification, narrowly missing out on qualification for further rounds. (Vault = 13.233, Uneven bars = 13.666, Balance beam = 12.333, Floor score = 12.233)

• Canoe Slalom - Luuka Jones - Kayak Singles Semis & Finals

  • Luuka finished in 8th place in the kayak single with a time of 102.33. She’ll compete in kayak cross starting on Saturday morning.

• Sailing - Jo Aleh & Molly Meech - Skiff

  • Jo & Molly came in 15th, 17th, and 20th in the first 3 races. They’ll move onto races 4, 5, and 6 on Monday 10:15pm.

• Football - Football Ferns vs. Colombia

  • The Football Ferns lost to Colombia 2-0. The Ferns will take on France on Thursday morning at 7am in their final group stage game.

• Rugby 7s - Black Ferns 7s vs. China

  • The Black Ferns 7s won against China 43-5, seeing 4 tries from Michaela Blyde. They’ll face Canada on Monday 7:30am.

• 7:30am - Black Ferns 7s vs. Canada - Paris 2

• 7:50am - Swimming - Erika Fairweather - 200m Freestyle Semifinal* - Paris 3

• 8am - Surfing - Saffi Vette (Heat 6) - Paris 12
