Olympics Update: Sunday, July 28

This email is full of New Zealand women doing incredible things at the Olympics.

Here’s your Olympics update for Sunday, July 28th:

It REALLY kicked off last night:

• Swimming - Hazel Ouwehand - 100m Butterfly Heats; Erika Fairweather, Eve Thomas - 400m Freestyle Heats

  • Erika barely missed out on a medal in the “race of the century,” taking home 4th in the 400m final, with a swim of 4:01.12, just behind Australia’s Ariarne Titmus, Canada’s Summer McIntosh, and USA’s Katie Ledecky.

  • Eve completed the 400m freestyle swim heat with a time of 4:11.86, which was not fast enough to move on to the final. She’ll compete in the 800m and 1500m and 4x200m relay swims.

  • Hazel completed the 100m butterfly swim with a time of 58.03, barely missing the 57.90 cutoff to qualify for the semifinals. This ends her Olympic journey.

• Rowing - Emma Twigg - Single Sculls Heats

  • Emma won her heat with a time of 7:34.97. She moves into the semis on Monday night.

• Rowing - Brooke Francis & Lucy Spoors - Double Sculls Heats

  • Brooke & Lucy won their heat with a score of 6:51.58. They move into the semis on Tuesday night.

• Equestrian - Jonelle Price - Eventing Team Dressage

  • Jonelle received a dressage score of 30.80, ranking her 27th individually. Working with Tim Price & Clarke Johnstone, their combined New Zealand team score is 83.00, ranking them in 4th place as they move into the 2nd event of the eventing team tonight: cross-country.

• Tennis - Erin Routliffe & Lulu Sun - Doubles Round 1; Lulu Sun - Singles Round 1

  • Erin & Lulu’s first round of doubles was cancelled due to rain. They will face Italy’s Sara Errani & Jasmine Paolini.

  • BREAKING: Lulu will also now play singles, filling the spot from the withdrawal of Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva! She’ll face Ukraine’s Marta Kostyok.

• Cycling (Road) - Kim Cadzow, Niamh Fisher-Black - Individual Time Trial

  • Kim came in 7th with a time of 41:46:02. Niamh did not enter the time trial. Both athletes are scheduled to compete in the road race on August 5.

• Canoe Slalom - Luuka Jones - Kayak Single Heats

  • Luuka came in 15th with times of 102.90 (first run) and 97.13 (second run, ranking her in 15th as she moves into the semis of the kayak single on Monday morning.
